Coordinating the visa strategy across countries saves time and avoids gaps in work rights. Below is an overview of the main employer options in each country we cover.
- Skills in Demand (482) for skilled roles of up to four years, including intra-company transfers.
- Employer Nomination Scheme (186) for permanent residence.
- Short Stay Specialist (400) for highly specialised work of up to three months, or up to six months with a strong business case.

Intra-company transfers into Australia
If your group has an overseas entity, moving an existing employee to Australia is often simpler than hiring externally:
- The 482 can be used for intra-company transferees. Under Australia’s international trade commitments, labour market testing may not apply to some executives, managers and specialists transferring from an associated entity. See labour market testing exemptions.
- The Australian entity (or the overseas company, through Overseas Business Sponsorship) must be an approved sponsor.
- Salary must meet the market rate and the income threshold, and the worker must be paid in line with Australian conditions.
- For short visits to attend meetings, negotiate or train staff, a visitor visa may be enough. Productive work usually needs a work visa.

Can an Australian worker on a 482 transfer to New Zealand?
They would need a New Zealand visa, such as an AEWV through an accredited New Zealand employer. Leaving Australia can affect their 482 and any plans for the 186, so plan the timing.
Do Australian citizens need a visa to work in New Zealand?
Australian citizens can generally live and work in New Zealand without applying for a work visa under the Trans-Tasman arrangements.
